ANTIQUE POT CUPBOARDS

ANTIQUE WARDROBES AND POT CUPBOARDS
There was a time, until recently, when all wardrobes seemed to be destined for the breakers. Built-in cupboards were replacing them everywhere. Then there was a revival in the Georgian clothes press; now
wardrobes seem to be perking up, led by the export trade. It is all very baffling and involves Fashion. Wardrobes were made in all the styles of the period. Many have been broken up or exported at very low prices.
Higher quality ones with veneers and inlays now seem to find a ready market, so scorn them not.
Clothes-press wardrobes of typical Edwardian type, based on late 18th century Georgian models. In walnut and oak.
A comprehensive wardrobe in oak. The long shallow drawers in the lower section were for trousers and were fitted with presses, a section which could be reconstructed as a folio chest. 1900-1910
Mahogany clothes press in the `Sheraton’ style with boxwood stringing. 1900-1910
Small Edwardian wardrobe with dressing chest and washstand en suite. Typical of many such sets made in large numbers in the period.
Large oak wardrobe en suite with dressing chest and washstand. Note the deep drawers under the hanging section. The inlay is of ebony and pewter.
A veneered satinwood wardrobe suite including a shield-back Hepplewhite-style chair (solid wood) with turned legs and a bedside cabinet veneered to match the wardrobe. Note how these turned legs are painted with black stringing lines to give the impression of reeding. The floral decoration is painted and the oval medallions depicting classical figures are also probably painted although on some furniture these scenes were put on by means of a printed transfer.
A walnut bedroom suite with inlaid boxwood stringing lines emphasising edge bandings and with ‘diamond-pane’ boxwood stringing decoration. Note the symmetrical pattern produced on the wardrobe doors by the veneer sheets and the vertical-torpedo shaped legs applied externally to the carcase construction of the tables and chair.1920-1940
Another high quality satinwood wardrobe in late 18th century amok.    ‘Sheraton’ style, with painted decoration.
A dwarf wardrobe and dressing table in rather violent lacquer decoration. The wardrobe could be used by a child or might make a good cocktail cabinet. Cabriole legs and `Queen Anne’ styling throughout.  c. 1925
A walnut side cabinet on cabriole legs. Its doors incorporate matched sheets of burr walnut veneers which give the impression of Rorschach’s ink-blot tests or some similar
A lacquered and painted wardrobe with a scene depicting something from James Hilton’s Shangri-La, perhaps.
A simple, pleasing wardrobe designed by Percy Wells, using three-ply for the panels and deal for the frame construction. The design goes right back to the panelled simplicity of 17th century models, but in trying to
achieve lightness the result may have been flimsy. c. 1920
Back to Chippendale  a mahogany wardrobe with `feather’ figuration, blind frets, pagoda-ish top and serpentine    600 The veneer figurations on this bedroom ensemble defy
bracket feet. Ignore the chair.
‘Burr walnut bedappled’ at its height  not to be viewed with an early morning hangover. c.1925
Maurice Adams version of ‘burr walnut bedappled’  on his splayed ‘Quannepplewhite’ feet and with panels of matched, quartered veneers on serpentine front and side panels. Wow!
A wardrobe suite including bedside table, dressing stool and chair. The base of each piece is emphasised by a band of darker veneer which, on the wardrobe and bedside table, is repeated above the doors. The central
door of the wardrobe is decorated by using a development of veneer ‘quartering’ of symmetrical sheets but incorporating geometric diamond shapes and vertical and horizontal lines. The overall effect of the very clean lines is extremely modern. 1920-1940
POT CUPBOARDS
Two pot cupboards of a design to be found in Smee’s catalogue of 1850 and still, again, in Shoolbred’s of 1876. Suitable for conversion to all kinds of uses. 1850-1880
Walnut bedside table-cum-pot holder with a marble top. Cleverly scalloped design on octagonal base.
Two satinwood bedside cabinets/pot holders of Edwardian taste stimulated by `Sheraton’ trends of the time.
