ANTIQUE COFFERS

ANTIQUE COFFERS

The coffer endured a revival in the 1860s. After all, it is a medieval piece of furniture. The revival led to an outright spate of reproductions, rebuilds and fakes. The Price Guide to Antique Furniture illustrates originals
and Victorian carve-ups in emulation, for it was not difficult to embellish the many plain three-band coffers which existed by adding carving to them. Some coffers must have been ‘made up’ by using the three-panel
heads of small beds.
The antique coffer enjoyed a tremendous revival in the 1970s, spurred by the boom in antique oak and an enormous demand from the Continent. There are signs that this has now passed its zenith and a return to a
more normal collecting situation, with quality and originality being appreciated, is taking place. Large numbers of Victorian reproductions, 1930s versions and outright fakes must, happily, have been exported.
From original interpretations to an out-and-out reproduction of high quality. It is possible that this was a plain, three-panel oak coffer of correct period, to which carved and inlaid decoration has been added. There is an honest look about the feet, formed by carrying down the joined frame, but the carved decoration and inlays give rise to doubts. Certainly, the arcaded panels (used often enough in ‘correct’ coffers) have a new, crisp look about them and the decoration inlaid into the three panels does not ring true to period. 1890-1920
A painted chest by an enthusiast of the late 1860s or 1870s, with heavy strap hinges in wrought iron and matching wrought iron reinforcing frame on the top. The painted flowers have the appearance of sunflowers
(Gothic-Anglo-Japanese-Aesthetic) and the piece follows the vogue for painted Gothic furniture associated with Burges (q.v.) who liked painted flamboyant pieces but was not too fussy about Gothic purity of motifs he used Gothic, classical and Renaissance illustrations indiscriminately to get the flamboyant effect he liked.
A ‘hall coffer’ by Gillows based on an adapted design of Talbert (q.v.). Reformed Gothic features include the pillars, dentillated and incised carving. The domed top is normally considered a drawback in the British Isles
because the piece cannot then be used for a table or seat.
An oak chest or coffer which copies a 17th and 18th century piece of furniture. The front is embellished with three panels featuring vertical ribbed treatment in imitation of linenfold carving. The legs, which are a
continuation of the end frame  true to tradition  are a little thin for a period piece and perhaps a little high, lacking wear at the foot. Intended in 1900-1915 as a hall piece for storage of travelling rugs. 1900-1916
Simple six-plank oak coffers from Maurice Adams’ book of 1926. Reasonably true to the original type. c.1925
A mule chest of the 1920s in plain oak. The two drawers below are fielded and the shaped fielded panels to the front are taken from 17th century forms. Now used at the end of the bed  to put the quilt in.
A three-panel simple oak coffer of the 1920s. The proportion is a bit too elongated vertically to be mistaken for an original piece.
